    Mechanical Contractor: Southland Industries
    General Contractor: McCarthy
    Engineer: Ted Jacobs Engineering
    Distributor: Ferguson Enterprises

Job: In total, approximately $200,000 worth of NIBCO® valves was used for the plumbing and mechanical applications at the Kaiser Fontana Medical Center in Fontana, Calif. This $434-million new construction project is scheduled to be completed in 2012. The 580,000-square-foot facility is situated on a 47-acre campus.

    The Edge:
This was the first large, high-profile project in Southern California that NIBCO was involved with after AB 1953, the lead-free* law, went into effect in that state. January 1, 2010, was the deadline for construction projects in California to comply with AB 1953, the law that requires lead-free products be used in domestic water applications. While the Kaiser Fontana Medical Center project was permitted prior to the deadline — and therefore exempt from compliance — Kaiser insisted that anything in the domestic water way meet the new lead-free requirements.

As a result, it was critical that the Southland Industries, the mechanical contractor on the job, be comfortable working with and installing this new untested product. The long relationship between NIBCO and Southland Industries was a key reason Southland had confidence in installing this new product line. NIBCO Regional Manager David Nankivell and Colin Crain met several times with the project management team at Southland. “We used these opportunities to discuss
