    • ABS plastic tubing, elbows

    General Contractor: Sundance Plumbing

Job: NIBCO was asked by a representative of the Streamborn Fly fishing Club, a member club of the Southwest Council Federation of Fly Fishers, to provide black ABS plastic tubing and elbow fittings for their monofilament recovery tubes.

    The Edge:

As one of the nation’s largest manufacturers and distributors of plumbing fittings and parts, NIBCO was pleased to donate some of the elements used in constructing the recovery tubes, according to company president Rex Martin.

There are plans to place monofilament fishing line recovery tubes at ocean boat landings from San Diego to Santa Barbara and throughout Southern California.

Tubes are 4-foot long, 4-inch diameter black ABS plastic with a 90-degree elbow glued to the top and a screw adapter plug on the bottom. In a pilot test project, Silver Lake Resort, one of the early sponsors, is emptying its tube every other day.

Volunteers from the Southwest Council Federation of Fly Fishers, with the aid of NIBCO, Sundance Plumbing and local sponsors, have placed monofilament recovery tubes for discarded fishing line throughout the area. “Discarded mono spin fishing line and leader material is a death trap for birds and other wildlife as well as being an eyesore. If you are discarding line, please dispose of it properly and safely,” said Greg Stumpf, council president.

The tubes, shaped like a submarine’s periscope, have been hung on existing posts adjacent to popular fishing areas. The local sponsors then take on the responsibility of emptying and disposing of the discarded fishing line.

Cost of the mono recovery tubes is $30 each. The SWC FFF is paying for some, while sponsors provide the funding or material for others.
